When I comprised my Books of 2017 list towards the end of December, I was dead set on the fact that nothing could change my mind and pip a book to the post. The last week of December, after my post had been published and the decisions entirely made, I started reading The Chalk Man by C.J. Tudor and around 40 pages in, I realised I had made a pretty awful decision. Not on reading the book- oh no. On posting my books of the year before the year was out; for The Chalm Man is arguably one of the best, if not the best, books that I read in 2017. As was the case with The Dry by Jane Harper that I read and reviewed last January, this book absolutely knocked me sideways and had me reading and reading, completely unable to put the book down. It was one of those books where I had to force myself to stop reading because I simply didn’t want it to end.

The book flips between two time periods, a kind of ‘then’ and ‘now’ between 2016, the book’s present day and 1986, the year when all the trouble started. It revolves around a group of five friends, but focuses primarily on and is written from the perspective of Eddie. Eddie is a teacher at the local secondary school, likes a drink and has seemingly struggled to deal with the death of his father to Alzheimer’s. He receives a letter in the post that he thinks is a joke, although definitely not a very funny one. The letter reminds him of the events of 1986 and the murder that still, in 2016, had questions unanswered. As children, the group of five, four boys and a girl, create a way of communicating using chalks, each of them using a different colour. Each symbol that they draw has a different meaning, whether it be a warning or telling them to meet somewhere in particular. This is all well and good until someone else starts using their method of communication, confusing matters and sending the group into matters of trouble.

Back to present day, incidents have cast certain members of the group aside. Nikki has long since moved away and Mike has been shunted from the group because of an unfortunate incident, permanently affecting the life Gav. When Mike gets in touch with Eddie with a proposition, everything changes and the chalk men start appearing again, reminding the group of everything they wanted to forget.

I absolutely LOVED this book (in fact, I’ve already recommended it to a few friends who I know are avid readers!). I couldn’t put it down, in spite of my attempts and every page was a twist in a completely different direction. The ending was thought-provoking and intriguing, and was definitely not to be expected. I immediately found myself attached to the characters and each one played a vital role in the story. Every little detail is meaningful and I wasn’t left with unanswered questions at the end. The writing style is intricate and beautiful which most definitely added to its success- it brings about a feeling of nostalgia, which I found funny as I wasn’t even ALIVE in 1986. I honestly can’t wait to see where C.J. Tudor goes next with her writing- she is without a doubt an author to keep an eye on.

A psychological thriller with a difference.

5/5.

The Chalk Man by C.J. Tudor will be published on 11th January 2018 by Penguin: Michael Joseph.

Travel: My 2018 Travel Goals

As you’ve probably seen if you’re a regular reader of my blog, last week I posted a few Resolutions for the year ahead. Obviously, I wouldn’t be a very good travel blogger if I didn’t make an equally long list of all the travel-y things that I want to accomplish in 2018! Here goes…

Travel: My 2018 Travel Goals | Hollie in Wanderlust | Travel Blogger

VISIT A NEW COUNTRY
Of course, my go to whenever I want to go away is usually France- I’m comforted by the place and there’s always so much to do and explore there. However, in 2018 I’d love to visit a brand spanking new country that I’ve never visited before. There are quite a few countries that I have in mind, but I’m thinking along the lines of Scandinavia this year- I’d love to travel to Denmark and see The Little Mermaid monument in Copenhagen and I’d also love to go to the Blue Lagoon in Iceland at some point. Hopefully with some careful planning and a good deal, I’ll be able to go to one of these amazing new places with my partner in crime.

EXPLORE MORE OF FRANCE
I have been to A LOT of cities in France, but of course there are so many cities that I’d love to check out at some point over the course of my life. A city that’s been on my wish list for a while now is Carcassonne, a town close to the Franco-Spanish border. The flights there are relatively inexpensive and it’s the perfect little getaway for a couple.

VISIT 4 NEW PLACES IN THE UK
As Brits, we’re all so obsessed with visiting other countries and beautiful hotspots around the world that we forget just how beautiful OUR little island actually is. There are loads of teensy tiny towns and spectacular cities that I want to explore at some point in the coming year, including Stratford Upon Avon, Cambridge (and Oxford, for that matter), Edinburgh and Brighton. Our island has so much to offer and I really hope to take it up on that offer in 2018.

EXPLORE MORE OF GERMANY
In 2017, I visited 2 brand spanking new cities in Germany: Nuremberg, the city next to where my good friend Antonia lives, and Munich, a city just a short train ride away. I think that 2018 will be the year where I finally book to go and visit Berlin, a city that everyone I know has been to and loved. So many things about Berlin appeal to me- the food, the history and the fashion- and having the opportunity to explore it at some point would be fantastic and a year well spent. I’d also love to go back to Frankfurt at some point as it was a city I really loved when I visited there on my year abroad.

GO SOMEWHERE OR DO SOMETHING COMPLETELY OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE
I am quite a safe person. I tend to go to places that I know, eat the foods I know I like, and stick to doing things that I know I enjoy. I’m not quite sure what this particularly goal will be- maybe the situation will present itself to me – but I’m definitely going to attempt saying ‘yes’ to things that I probably wouldn’t have done in the past!

What are your travel goals for 2018? Comment and let me know!

Life: Five 2018 Resolutions that I’m actually going to try and keep

Life: Five 2018 Resolutions that I’m actually going to try and keep

This time last year, I posted my 2017 goals. With the exception of buying a house, which is still very much a work in progress, I am pleased to say that I managed to stick to my goals and had an amazing year, for the most part. I’m back here again this year with another list of ‘goals’ that I want to achieve. This year, I’ve made sure I’ve been incredibly realistic with my Resolutions and that they’re resolutions that actually mean something.

KEEP UP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE
One thing that I’ve been really proud of myself for doing in 2017 is being much more positive about myself, my capabilities and my life than I have been in the past. I’m hoping to continue on with this as I’ve found that being more positive in myself has made me more positive in general, with regards to work, my relationships and my general happiness has increased astronomically.

MAKE MEMORIES AND TAKE PHOTOS
This was another resolution I made last year and I kept up the premise and filled pages upon pages with photos and memories, all ready to look back on whenever I fancy. I’m going to carry on doing this, giving my future family the opportunity to look back at the things I did when I was younger if they so wish.

APPRECIATE EVERYONE AROUND ME
It’s so easy to forget how lucky you are to have amazing friends and family around you, and even easier to take everything they do for you for granted. One of my resolutions for 2018 is to show everyone just how much I appreciate them and remind myself just how lucky I am to have a loving environment surrounding me.

UPDATE MY BLOG MUCH MORE REGULARLY
I think it’s fair to say that I’ve let myself go a little bit with regards to blogging and it’s made me incredibly sad to think that something I’ve worked so hard on over the last few years has just gone to pot so quickly. A (realistic) target for me for 2018 is to attempt to blog at least once a week. Getting back on track won’t be easy but a little bit of effort on my part will have fantastic rewards.

SAVE, SAVE, SAVE
As always, I’m saving up for the year. I have lovely things planned and I’m still putting money aside, bit by bit, so I can make a move and buy a house but I’d also love a summer holiday with my boyfriend and a few weekend trips as the year goes on. Travel is my favourite thing to do of all and being sensible with my money means that going away will be as frequent as it used to be!

What are your 2018 Resolutions?
