University: Freshers Advice

I’m heading back to University at the end of the month for my 4th and final year of my degree. Because I do Modern European Languages at university, we have a compulsory year abroad - I chose to teach on my year abroad so I’ve had a full year with no exams, no revision and very little work at all so getting back into the swing of things is definitely going to be a challenge.

Starting university can be daunting, especially if you’re living away from home. I only moved from Lancashire to Liverpool, so it wasn’t so much of an enormous move for me as I can get home in about an hour if I really need to. I decided to study at the University of Liverpool for a number of reasons but mostly because I knew that it was an amazing establishment and that I would get exactly where I want to be in life with their encouragement and advice. 3 years later and it is honestly the best decision I’ve ever made.

I thought I’d do a little Back to University post series addressing a number of things for anyone worried about freshers, meeting their new flatmates and the like. This one is going to focus mostly on halls of residences and freshers events.

My Halls of Residence was off campus, about 2 or 3 miles from the University itself and 4 miles from Liverpool city centre. I decided to go self-catered because I have dietary requirements and ensuite because the thought of sharing a bathroom with 9 other people made me feel a bit queasy! There were 10 people on my corridor and we shared a kitchen, and there were 6 or 7 corridors in the entire building. Our corridor became renowned for parties and predrinking, which was fine but  going out every night wasn’t really my cup of tea (nor could I afford it!!) Getting used to living with people I didn’t know was surprisingly easy and you quickly make friends with the people you’re living with. I ended up living with all of the girls who lived on my corridor in second year, and I’m still good friends with 5 of them three years later.

Freshers week (or fortnight in Liverpool’s case) was absolutely fantastic. You meet hundreds of different people from all sorts of backgrounds and cultures, people from different countries and people who might have lived just minutes away from you at home! Add wine, quad vods and more sambuca than you can even bear to think about and you’ll have yourself an amazing time. Most unis tend to offer wristbands or tickets which give you access to a number of events over the course of the week- personally I would wait to buy something like this until you meet the people you’re going to be living with because there’s a good chance you won’t manage to get to all of the events. The wristbands are usually quite expensive (at Liverpool they’re £60) and often some of the more popular events aren't included in the price. Generally you can buy tickets to events on the door so you won’t miss out from not buying a wristband! In our freshers week we went to a paint party, a Where’s Wally fancy dress and a Silent Disco so there are lots of different things that you can try out.

If you’re not into clubbing or drinking then there’re still plenty of things you can get involved in. There are freshers fairs taking place during the day where you can sign up to clubs and sports and meet like minded people. There are usually pub quizzes in the evenings plus there are enough gigs going on to keep any music fan entertained. Don’t hesitate to head down to the freshers fairs- even if you don’t find anything you want to sign up for, they usually give out bundles and bundles of freebies so you’ll save yourself a lot of money.

Plus, there’s usually a Dominos stall- who would say no to free pizza?

As I’ve mentioned a few times on twitter (what can I say, I’m excited!) it’s my birthday next week and to celebrate my flatmates and I are hosting a little party at our house. I went a bit all out for the occasion and treated myself to all sorts of goodies so I thought I’d do a wee blogpost here about what I’m planning on wearing on the night itself.

I went shopping with my two best friends in Manchester last week and I told myself beforehand that I wasn’t allowed to spend any money, that I already had a few dresses that I could wear at my party and that I definitely wasn’t looking for something new… That lasted about half an hour into our shopping trip when we stepped foot into Topshop and I found about 5 different dresses and playsuits that were ten times better than the dresses I’d chosen at home. I tried them all on and fell absolutely head over heels in love with the most gorgeous Victorian style high necked white playsuit. Playsuits normally don’t fit me very well as I’m very long legged but have a short upper body so I was ridiculously surprised when I tried it on to discover it flattered me in all the best ways.

Obviously buying a new outfit meant that I had to buy shoes to match as well and I was incredibly lucky to get the ones I’d been eyeing up on Public Desire in the sale AND with an extra 20% off the sale price. With offers like that, how was I really supposed to resist? The shoes are probably the highest I’ve ever bought but they have quite a solid platform on the front of the foot so they don’t feel remarkably high luckily. I still have a feeling I’m going to have to be carried from place to place after a couple of glasses of wine but are you really the birthday girl if you’re prim and proper?

I still have to pick up a little bag for the night as I don’t have one that matches (what a shame!) but other than that I’m good to go. My cousin’s doing my hair and makeup for the night and she’s really good at eye makeup in particular so I’m looking forward to seeing her work her magic on me.

What are your plans for the weekend?

Life: A Trip To Chester Zoo

As part of the weekly Thursday Date Day thing me and the boy have had going on for the last few weeks, yesterday we took a little trip to Chester to go and have a look around it’s famous zoo. I absolutely love animals and wildlife and have always been a little sceptical about zoos but I’m happy to report that Chester Zoo is absolutely fantastic and I’ll definitely be going there again. All of the enclosures were large and not particularly crowded, animals looked happy and well cared for and it seems like they do a lot for conservation.

We were incredibly fortunate that we went yesterday as the weather was absolutely incredible, We managed to see penguins and a crocodile being fed, all of which was being filmed for a channel 4 documentary. My favourite animals in the world are turtles and tortoises, as some of you may know, and they had an abundance of them at the zoo which made me ridiculously happy. I thought I’d use this post to share a few pictures that I took during the day, and I definitely would recommend going to the zoo at some point if you’re close-by. They’ve just opened up an amazing new island exhibit which was fabulous and I definitely want to go again as there was so much that we didn’t have a chance to see.

Have you been to Chester Zoo recently?? What did you enjoy?

I’ve had a busy few days recently but I’m starting to get back on the ball- preparing for going back to university, keeping on top of housework, work and blogging has taken its toll a little bit but who doesn’t love a challenge! I thought I’d do a little September Reading list post as I haven’t done one in a while. I’ve only got 4 books on my list this month because I know how busy I’m going to be, but I’m sure I’ll get them finished pretty quickly.

I received a copy of The Chosen Queen by Joanna Courtney from the lovely team at Pan Macmillan. I’ve actually heard quite a lot about this book and was thrilled when I was asked if I wanted a copy of it sending to me. Joanna Courtney is being advertised as being the next Philippa Gregory and that’s an absolutely enormous accolade. I haven’t started it yet but it’s first on my list for this month.

Sticking with my theme of reading war fiction, the other three books on my list are war related in some way or another. My second book is Leaving Berlin by Joseph Kanon, set in post-war Berlin. This book jumped out at me in Waterstones and then when I got to the counter it was set up there as one of the reads of the month so I definitely think it was a good choice. My second of three war based fiction choices is The Heroes’ Welcome by Louisa Young. This novel is set after the end of World War One and focuses on its affects. My final choice is one that I’ve had for a while and haven’t got around to reading- The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan, which is set in Japan.

I’m excited to get stuck into these books and post my reviews up here!

What are you reading at the moment?

It’s my 22nd birthday this month and I’ve been eyeing up quite a few beauty goodies! I’ve been on a complete and utter shopping ban for the last 2 months and I’ve done SO well, I only slipped once in that time and that was purchasing something I actually needed as opposed to wanted so I’ll let it slide!

I’ve been eyeing up the Naked Smokey Palette from the moment it was announced and I’ve read so many different reviews by bloggers to see if it’s worth the price and I think I’ve been convinced. The colours look amazing and the packaging alone was enough to make me fall in love with it. I didn’t get around to getting any of the other Naked palettes as I’m not much of a neutral eye makeup kind of girl, so I definitely think the smoky one is much more suited to me.

I included the NARS contouring kit in my NARS wishlist and I haven’t got around to buying this one yet, so I thought I’d include it in this wishlist as well. I’m quite glad that a few months later I’m still lusting after this product because it is quite expensive so at least I know for sure that I actually do want it. I love the packaging and the look of the product and I’ve heard nothing but good things about it!

Every year I receive a few pieces from pandora and the ring and the charm here at the two I’ve chosen this year. The charm has the birthstone for September on it and I think it’s absolutely gorgeous! The ring will go beautifully with the one I already wear so I’m looking forward to stacking them up!

I absolutely love the Real Techniques brush sets so I thought I’d ask for some nice new eye brushes, considering how I’m hoping to purchase the Naked Palette. I’ve heard that these are very good brushes and they’re very reasonably priced as well.

Finally, I’m really getting into cooking lately and I absolutely love Gino D’Acampo. Italian food is definitely my favourite type of food so I hope his cookbook is as good as it looks. I’ve asked my little brother to get this one for me!

Maybelline Rocket Volum’ Mascara
For the last few years I’ve used nothing but Benefit mascaras, swapping from They’re Real to the Rollerlash mascara just a few months back. They had a promotion on at the Leclerc supermarket in Strasbourg and I managed to get the Maybelline Rocket Lash mascara for just a few euros. I kept it in a drawer under my bed for ages but I’ve started using it properly the last week and a half and I absolutely love it! I have long and thick eyelashes naturally so mascara isn’t my priority when I’m doing my makeup but this one really adds both volume and length to my lashes and it’s incredibly noticeable!

Shut up and Dance - Talking is Hard
I just cannot get this catchy song out of my head and considering that the last song that was in my head for as long as this one was Sugar by Maroon 5 (and it’s still my fave song of 2015) it’s unlikely to leave any time soon. If you haven’t heard it already, although I’m sure everyone in the UK has by now, give it a listen!

F.R.I.E.N.D.S
I’ve been getting properly back into FRIENDS again the last few weeks and I’ve been watching the series from the beginning again. Watching it over and over just makes me remember how amazing this series is and how many amazing times I’ve had over the years watching it.

THE OFFICE US
I’ve also been watching WAY too much of The Office. I’ve gotten through 4 seasons of it SO quickly and I don’t see myself getting bored of it any time soon. I love all of the characters (except for Ryan, weirdly) and I completely “ship” Pam and Jim. I can’t wait to see where the storyline is heading and get up to date with it all.

Thrillers
I’ve read some fantastic books recently, but I’m particularly enjoying thrillers. I finished The Lie by C.L. Taylor last week and I’m looking forward to getting my teeth stuck into The Girl in the Photograph by Kate Riordan.

What are you loving this week?
