Life: Making myself feel like 'Me' again

Life: Making myself feel like 'Me' again

Over the last few months, I’ve not really felt myself. I’ve been feeling a little bit down in the dumps, I look tired and there’s been a serious strain on my social life. A lot of this – primarily the tiredness – is linked to the fact that I work A LOT and my job is incredibly demanding, both physically and emotionally – but I have really started to feel like enough is enough and I’ve put a number of things in place to ensure that I start feeling less like my current self and more like the happy, energetic, old me.

SELF LOVE:
Showing myself love has always been something I’ve found a little bit difficult. I find it hard to see the good things about my appearance and treating myself has always been a bit of a no-go because there’s always been something we’re saving up for, whether that be for the house, a holiday or just bills that need paying. As a consequence, my confident has dropped even more than usual and the ability to feel good about myself is proving impossible at the moment. I’ve made a sort of mid-year resolution to look after myself a little bit more and show myself the self-love that my body needs – whether that be with a relaxing bath at the end of the week, whacking on a little bit of fake tan to perk myself up or else just applying makeup for the hell of it, rather than because there’s a specific event going on. I’m going to start treating myself to massages when I’m feeling worse for wear and getting my brows and lashes done to perk myself up when I’ve had a particularly long week. Showing yourself self-love is never a bad thing; who’s going to love you if you don’t even love yourself, after all?

DOWN-TIME:
As a teacher, my evenings are usually spent prepping for the next day’s lessons, printing off worksheets and marking the day’s books for the next day. I usually leave school around 6pm having marked the vast majority of the books and then spend the next few hours going over lesson plans for the next day, planning for the next week and marking any books I didn’t get around to at school. With 58 English books, plus afternoon books to mark each day, my evenings are pretty packed and having down time usually comes at a cost. My new rule will be no work after 9pm and between 9pm and 10pm I’ll get stuck into a good book and try and stay away from technology as far as I can. Having this time to myself can only be beneficial to my happiness so I’m excited to see how I feel in a few weeks time.

DATES:
Having the time to go out and have a date night is something that Richard and I are struggling to do at the moment, with both of us working on different schedules and having different days off. We do have the benefit of having a home together, which means we can have time together whenever we’re both in, but we’ve decided that sticking to a routine and making plans to go out is something that we’re going to start doing more of. We have a few trips booked over the coming weeks and months, including a little break down south this week, so we’re definitely starting as we mean to go on.

TRAVEL:
I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t book spontaneous trips here there and everywhere. I’ve booked a surprise trip for Richard’s birthday in May (the surprise being that he doesn’t know where we’re going) and we’ve booked to go to Amsterdam in August and are going back to Nuremberg in November to see friends (said friends are coming to us at the end of April.) I want to get back into a habit of being more spontaneous and just deciding to book a flight somewhere bizarre, with time to deal with the finer details further along the line. I’ve missed travelling and this is definitely one of the things that make me feel like myself.

What do you do when you’re feeling a bit down and out of character? Let me know in the comments!

Travel: My 2018 Travel Goals

As you’ve probably seen if you’re a regular reader of my blog, last week I posted a few Resolutions for the year ahead. Obviously, I wouldn’t be a very good travel blogger if I didn’t make an equally long list of all the travel-y things that I want to accomplish in 2018! Here goes…

Travel: My 2018 Travel Goals | Hollie in Wanderlust | Travel Blogger

VISIT A NEW COUNTRY
Of course, my go to whenever I want to go away is usually France- I’m comforted by the place and there’s always so much to do and explore there. However, in 2018 I’d love to visit a brand spanking new country that I’ve never visited before. There are quite a few countries that I have in mind, but I’m thinking along the lines of Scandinavia this year- I’d love to travel to Denmark and see The Little Mermaid monument in Copenhagen and I’d also love to go to the Blue Lagoon in Iceland at some point. Hopefully with some careful planning and a good deal, I’ll be able to go to one of these amazing new places with my partner in crime.

EXPLORE MORE OF FRANCE
I have been to A LOT of cities in France, but of course there are so many cities that I’d love to check out at some point over the course of my life. A city that’s been on my wish list for a while now is Carcassonne, a town close to the Franco-Spanish border. The flights there are relatively inexpensive and it’s the perfect little getaway for a couple.

VISIT 4 NEW PLACES IN THE UK
As Brits, we’re all so obsessed with visiting other countries and beautiful hotspots around the world that we forget just how beautiful OUR little island actually is. There are loads of teensy tiny towns and spectacular cities that I want to explore at some point in the coming year, including Stratford Upon Avon, Cambridge (and Oxford, for that matter), Edinburgh and Brighton. Our island has so much to offer and I really hope to take it up on that offer in 2018.

EXPLORE MORE OF GERMANY
In 2017, I visited 2 brand spanking new cities in Germany: Nuremberg, the city next to where my good friend Antonia lives, and Munich, a city just a short train ride away. I think that 2018 will be the year where I finally book to go and visit Berlin, a city that everyone I know has been to and loved. So many things about Berlin appeal to me- the food, the history and the fashion- and having the opportunity to explore it at some point would be fantastic and a year well spent. I’d also love to go back to Frankfurt at some point as it was a city I really loved when I visited there on my year abroad.

GO SOMEWHERE OR DO SOMETHING COMPLETELY OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE
I am quite a safe person. I tend to go to places that I know, eat the foods I know I like, and stick to doing things that I know I enjoy. I’m not quite sure what this particularly goal will be- maybe the situation will present itself to me – but I’m definitely going to attempt saying ‘yes’ to things that I probably wouldn’t have done in the past!

What are your travel goals for 2018? Comment and let me know!

Goodreads: Why I love the Book Blogging Community

When I started blogging, all those years ago, I was a shy and introverted 21-year-old trying to kill some time living abroad. I never in my wildest dreams thought that what I thought was a little hobby would develop into something as exciting as it has. In the last three years, I have formed relationships with bloggers and authors alike, I have been nominated for prestigious blogging awards and I have worked with brands I never would have dreamed to have worked with. In spite of this, and my move over from writing exclusively about books to a more varied blog, full of travel and food, the Book Blogging community is something that I am honoured to be a part of and it has done amazing things for me as a person.

You make friends with people you definitely wouldn’t otherwise.
One of my favourite things about this amazing community is the most obvious things: connecting with people all over the world and talking about something that we all have in common with one another- books. Having the opportunity to share my thoughts on something I’ve loved since I was a little girl makes me incredibly happy and it’s nice to be able to get recommendations from other like minded indiviudals.

It motivates me to read more often and more varied books.
Being surrounded by readers all the time definitely encourages me to read more. Seeing everyone recommending fantastic books means that I feel more motivated to get through my current read, so I can start reading the next!

I’ve befriended SO many of my favourite authors.
Reading and reviewing a book by one of your favourite authors is made even better when they actually acknowledge, engage and form a friendship with you! I’ve befriended quite a few different authors over the years and engage with them on a regular basis. It’s nice to know that they appreciate your review and it’s nice to be able to show my own appreciation on a public forum such as Twitter.

The (exciting) perk of getting books prior to publication.
I’m not going to lie: getting an advanced reader copy of a book makes me blissfully happy. Having the opportunity to explore a book before everyone else does and share my thoughts with the publishers is an absolute privilege and I feel very lucky to be in the position that I’m in. It’s also really helped me financially, as I’m able to put money aside to save knowing full well that I have more than enough books on my shelves to get through the weeks and months. Obviously, I still make the unnecessary book purchases, but I wouldn’t be a book blogger if I didn’t!

What do you love about the Book Blogging community? Let me know!

Life: Don't Forget To Treat Yourself

Life: Don't Forget To Treat Yourself | Hollie in Wanderlust | Lifestyle | Savings

As you’ll all probably know by now (because I complain about the impending return to school EVERY FIVE MINUTES), I’ve landed myself a fab new job and I’m all but ready to get stuck into the stressful year ahead of me. I’ve never really had a problem with treating myself when I thought I deserved it, but knowing full well just how stressed I’m going to be this year gives me all the more reason to save up for some lovely things. As a teacher, I know I’ll be much less inclined to spend my money on clothes this year because a) smart clothing is mandatory and b) I plan on living in my pyjamas at the weekend, so my savings will be much healthier this year than they were last.

REFURBISHING MY FLAT
I’ve been buying new pieces of furniture, new artwork and accessories over the course of the last few months and I’m happy with how the flat’s coming along now. There are still quite a few things to do and adjustments to make, but every new little purchase makes the entire flat even more lovely to come home to. Having a stressful day at work means that I want to come back home to comfort and a pretty, cosy home so these changes really are necessary and in all honesty, integral to my happiness. New crockery and a fluffy rug are the next items on the agenda: hopefully by Christmas the entire place will be completely unrecognisable.

BEAUTY TREATS
Teaching is stressful, there’s absolutely no doubt about that. I’ve made the incredibly WISE choice of booking myself in for some lovely treats in October. I have a hair appointment already pencilled in and I’m going to get my nails jazzed up and enjoy a relaxing spa day. Self care is incredibly important and it’ll be something to look forward to after a long 7 weeks of term.

THE HANDBAG I’VE ALWAYS WANTED
When I did a teaching placement out in Italy during my Undergraduate degree, I fully intended on spending my last (incredibly generous) payslip on a Louis Vuitton handbag. At the time I was 20 and definitely had more important things to spend my money on, so the woman I worked with convinced me against it and I put the dosh towards my year abroad fund. This was a good idea and I don’t regret it at all, but nearly 4 years later and I still want the handbag. I’ve decided that I’ll be putting around £100 a month, when my finances allow, aside for the bag and treating myself to it at the end of the year, as a ‘well done on completing your NQT year’ gift from me to me. Obviously, unexpected bills and life happen so there’s a good chance I’ll end up putting this on hold and buying next year but if I can afford to do it come August 2018, I think I will be doing. I work incredibly hard and I shouldn’t have to feel guilty about treating myself to something that I’ve wanted for a long time, if I have the money to do it.

THAT TRIP OF A LIFETIME
I like to use all the summer holidays I get to travel as much as I possibly can and next summer will be no different. Booking package holidays in August is asking for an overpriced rip off, so luckily my own talent in finding excellent deals comes in handy. I’ve been pricing up a long haul trip somewhere a little more exotic and have a few places in mind, but I’ll be making my final decision in December and booking during the Christmas holidays for the following August. Of course, a little mini-break somewhere wouldn’t go amiss either so I’ll be looking at booking a lovely little European adventure as well for sometime next year.

What are you planning on treating yourself to over the coming year? Let me know!
