As a nearly 25-year-old female, the chick-flick is something that has played an integral part of my upbringing. It’s fair to say that of all the chick flicks I have seen in my lifetime – and trust me, I’ve watched a lot of them – that Clueless, staring the beautifully amazing Alicia Silverstone, is up there with one of the best. As a reader, I’m naturally a big fan of Jane Austen and Emma, the book that Cluelessis loosely based on, is one of my favourite tales of misdemeanour and scheming. 

I must admit, I feel like an absolute nineties queen in this gorgeous bodycon dress. The last few months have involved me really coming to terms with my body image and I’ve been trying to push myself out of my monochrome comfort zone and wear clothes that are a little more ‘out there’ and show off my personality a little bit more than my usual attire. It also happens to be an absolute steal on I Saw It First – currently selling for £10. 

This dress is definitely outside of that comfort zone but I have to say, I absolutely love it. The yellow and black checked pattern is absolutely gorgeous and the whole outfit comes together when paired with some black heeled boots. I feel as though I’m really giving off that Clueless vibe but because of the cotton material and the length of the dress, I’m also able to stay nice and cool in this crazy British weather that we’re having at the moment. Tartan styled clothes really seem to be in at the moment so maybe for once I’m keeping up with the trends here! I must admit that I would be a little bit nervous to wear this one out and about during the day but I can see myself wearing this on a night out with a pair of heels and a curly blow and rocking the night away.

My lovely partner celebrated his 25^thbirthday last week so naturally, I took it as an excuse to spoil him rotten (and book an exciting trip at the same time). I am very fortunate having Rich in my life and he does so much to make me happy so a lovely, romantic break away was the perfect way to return the favour. After umm-ing and ahh-ing over the location, my need to return to France took over and I booked a two night stay in central Paris with the hope that I could later convince Richard that Disneyland was the perfect day-trip to take. I didn’t have high hopes on that one but it’s funny how luck works in your way – a friend of mine had some spare tickets to the Disneyland parks that were due to expire this week so offered them to us to use! How could we say no to that stroke of luck? 

Getting to Disneyland from central Paris is pretty simple to do and can be done very cheaply as well. As we went to Paris for the weekend, we benefitted from buying the tickets jeune week-end metro passes, for people under the age of 26, which cost just under €9 each for unlimited day travel on the metro and RER trains. The train from central Paris to Disneyland is an RER train so was inclusive within the ticket- otherwise a single ticket costs €6,50! We hopped on the RER A Line from Châtelet-Les Halles to Marne-la-Vallée, the station that’s just a stone throw away from the Disneyland Parks. 

Dressing for the occasion was a must- I made sure to pack a Disney themed headband- and as the forecasts had predicted incredibly hot weather I had an important decision to make regarding my outfit for the day. I wanted something lightweight to keep me cool but also classy enough that I was covered up for the family-friendly theme park. I’m really loving wrap dresses at the moment so ordered a couple of beautiful ones on ASOS. The one I eventually went for was this classic striped wrap dress from Warehouse – very similar in style to my other Warehouse wrap dress, just much more vibrant in colour and completely the opposite of my normal style. It really has been a ‘new year, new me’ in terms of fashion choices! I paired the dress with a pair of slip on pumps, perfect for the inevitable miles of walking that we were bound to do. 

The outfit went down an absolute treat in the park and has had such a positive response from everyone that’s seen it so far! It covered up enough of my body that I didn’t feel self-conscious or awkward walking around without my jacket on but was loose enough that I didn’t melt in the 28 degree heat. It was the perfect rollercoaster riding outfit, without a doubt. 

It’s fair to say that we had an absolute ball at Disneyland – the rides were fantastic and the entire experience was magical beyond belief. The atmosphere at the place was remarkable – I imagine that Disneyland is the only place where grown adults can completely lose their inhibitions and let loose in such a child-like way. Walking around the parks was fantastic and there really was something for everyone. We rode ride after ride, had a little river ride through a fairytale wonderland and ate Bavarian hotdogs in Geppetto’s workshop.  I couldn’t imagine spending a better day with my other half – the first day in a magical Parisian adventure.

I am very much a ‘play it safe’ kind of girl. I do my makeup in exactly the same way every time I get dolled up, using exactly the same products in exactly the same order – with the exception of a different lipstick, depending on the outfit I’m wearing. On a daily basis, when I’m not working, I stick to jeans and a nice top, making sure to go slightly overboard on a night out. I structure my days in the same way – I get home from work and have a ‘break’ until 7pm every day, then finish off whatever planning or resourcing needs doing for the day. We eat at a similar time each evening and I go to bed around the same time as well. I like my routine and, generally speaking, it works well.

IS THIS THE RIGHT WAY TO LIVE?

In spite of this, I know I can live in a much less restrictive way. I realise that some of my habits mean that I am a little bit too structured in how I act, and a lot of change stresses me out and makes me feel incredibly anxious. I love fashion and I love clothes, and buying clothes that are a little bit ‘out there’ is something that I like to do, then promptly return because I stress far too much about what other people think about what I’m wearing.

One of my recent goals is to care less about what other people think, and concentrate on my own happiness. If I want to wear something that’s completely out of my comfort zone, then I’m going to do it. I ordered this absolutely gorgeous co-ord suit from Miss Selfridge last week and my initial reaction was to send it straight back. The colour is a beautiful lemon yellow that stands out like nothing I’ve ever worn before- which of course, was part of the problem. My instinct towards wearing black and neutral colours – aka, safe and boring – kicked in. Even my boyfriend asked when I’d have the chance to wear something so bold.

The answer to that question? Whenever I want to.

STANDING OUT OVER FITTING IN

I’ve realised that actually, no one really cares what other people wear for longer than a few seconds. I’m trying to approach life with a much more laid-back attitude and quite frankly, I’ve stopped caring what other people think of me, what I wear and what I do. It’s a hard attitude and stance to follow as it’s human nature to care what other people think but I do think that I am starting to see the benefits of it. By no means am I completely void of feeling and this is absolutely not a quick fix to the feelings that I have when I’m placed in unfamiliar  territory but my point here is that if I enjoy something and I like the way something looks on me, then it’s absolutely no one else’s business except my own. That’s the way I’m going to approach things from this day onward.

This suit? Yes, it’s lemon yellow. Yes, it’s definitely not something I’d normally wear. But you know what? It’s incredibly comfortable, it’s lightweight so would be absolutely perfect in the summer and to be quite honest with you? I think I look great. And that, my dear friends, is all that matters.

I recently collaborated on a fashion blog post with http://www.roman-blinds-direct.co.uk/ and whilst I’m a bit slow off the mark to post about it, I thought I’d do a little blog post about the brand and what they do and what my contribution was all about. I absolutely jumped on the opportunity to be able to contribute something fashion related to the blog of an incredibly well known brand in the world of interior design, so while this post does seem a little bit out of place it allowed me to discuss fashion in a historical sense and express myself creatively on a new platform. Roman Blinds Direct is one of the leading UK providers of home furnishing products- an amazing brand to get on the good side of if you’re someone like me who’s looking to move into their own house within the next year or so. I was asked by their head of Social Media to contribute a little something to their blog concerning an event that happened 50 years ago to the day last week, the unravelling of a fashion scandal which had Australia up in arms!
