V-Day: How To Have the Perfect (Date) Night All Under One Roof*

It’s that time of year again: that one that begins with the dreaded “V.” If you’re single, like me, the whole palaver can be quite over the top and frustrating. I’m not really a celebrator of Valentines, single or not, but last Thursday evening I was lucky enough to be invited to a little pre-Valentines shindig of eating good food and watching a fab movie, at the Printworks in Manchester. I invited one of my friends to come along with me and join in the fun and boy oh boy, a lot of fun was had.

I’m at an age (the young age of 23, if you’re wondering) where heading to the Printworks is actually a regular occurrence: it’s definitely got that reputation for being a student-y venue, and whilst I’m not quite one of those any more (the teacher’s bags under my eyes are glaringly obvious), I still find that it’s a really good place to grab a bite to eat and a drink with friends. My usual go-to when I’m in Manchester is Chiquitos (I just can’t say no to their pulled pork quesadillas) but in an effort to be a little bit more original (and try something outside of my comfort zone!), I opted to visit Wagamamas and spice up my life with some good old-fashioned Japanese food.

One of the good things about Printworks is the fact that all of the restaurants, bars and venues are under one roof, meaning that access was ridiculously easy and our journey from Wagamama to ODEON took mere seconds (which was fantastic, considering the fact we were 10 minutes late in setting off to see our film AND the fact that Manchester is eternally arctic and venturing outside of the building would have been horrendous.) There really is something for absolutely everyone: Liam, who I took along with me, for example, is a vegetarian and still managed to find something amazing and delicious to eat on the menu.

Wagamama was particularly easy to find and the staff were ridiculously accommodating and made sure that everything was up to scratch with our food. Our waitress was very attentive and checked on us all throughout our meal, even though the restaurant was pretty busy! She took the time to advise us on some things on the menu that we probably otherwise wouldn’t have tried. She recommended that we try the mushroom and aubergine hirata steamed buns which we definitely wouldn’t have chosen otherwise and they were absolutely phenomenal. I absolutely LOVE carrot juice so I tried Wagamama carrot filled contribution to the juice trend. In all honesty, I could have drunk it by the bucket load: it was ridiculously refreshing and the ginger definitely complemented the carrot flavour. Alongside the mushroom steamed buns, we also ordered the ebi katsu which were essentially battered chilli prawns. I love prawns, I love chilli, and to be frank, I would have been perfectly content with just a plate full of these delights. I definitely spied my pal eyeing up my last prawn whilst I was eating some of my main course. I think murder might have occurred if that prawn had left my plate. For mains, I ordered the beef teriyaki donburi, a firm favourite of mine whilst Liam opted for the seafood ramen. We were both incredibly impressed by both the food and service, which just goes to show that Printworks have a fine establishment in Wagamama in their building.

Bellies full and feeling optimistic about our film choice (T2 Trainspotting), we headed the short distance through Printworks to ODEON. I LOVE ODEON. I’m all for independent cinemas and fully encourage people to use them whenever they can but there’s honestly nothing more reliable than a good ODEON cinema. They always have regular showings of films and of course, they serve my favourite raspberry tango ice blast. I have a habit of falling asleep whenever I go to the cinema (dark lights and comfy seats = sleepy hol) but I’m pleased to say I managed to stay awake for the entire duration of the film. The ODEON in Printworks is enormous: it was a little bit like a maze trying to navigate our way up to the screen where our film was being shown. I’ve never seen a cinema as big which obviously has its advantages- the number of films on show was vast so obviously we had a lot of choice when choosing the perfect flick for us. If I’d have had my way, we’d have gone for a viewing of La La Land but that didn’t sit particularly well with my partner in crime. No complaints whatsoever, though, because as a book blogger, watching Trainspotting is definitely something that appeals to me: I’ve read and loved the book and I was incredibly excited to see what they were going to do with the sequel.

I was not in any way disappointed: the film was hilarious, brought together the original, incredible cast and was accompanied with a bloody spectacular soundtrack. There were a few things that happened during the film that threw me a little and I had to really think about the first film- I’d recommend a rewatch of the original Trainspotting if you’re planning on seeing this one but it’s definitely possible as a standalone as well!

We had around an hour after our screening of the show before it was time to get our train back to Liverpool so we OBVIOUSLY nipped into Yates’ for a little bevvie to end the night. I’ll definitely be coming back to Printworks for any future date nights I might have: the range of choice appeals without a doubt. No matter what your taste in food, drink or film, there is something for everyone. The entire evening came together nicely and everything is so affordable. If you fancy a fun, romantic evening on a relatively small budget then Printworks is most definitely the one for you.

I’d like to say thank you to the PR team at Printworks, Odeon and Wagamama for accommodating us on this amazing evening! As always, views are my mine and mine alone.

How to Pick Yourself Up When the Winter Blues Hit Home

I don’t know about you, but the new year tends to make me very dreary and down in the dumps. I have a few fool proof ways of making sure that my mood picks up when I begin to feel like this and thought I’d share a few of them here today.

Lighting candles and snuggling up on the sofa with a hot water bottle, a hot drink and a good book.
Phew! That was quite a long one! As a book blogger, there’s no better cure for winter blues for me than a good book and a hot drink. I absolutely LOVE lighting my Salted Caramel Yankee candle, getting all my snuggly blankets out and settling down in front of the fire with a book in hand. I tend to pop something on the TV in the background as well to give myself a bit of background noise but it’s nice to be able to just get fully immersed in a solid piece of literature. I find myself fully recuperated and ready to tackle whatever the next day throws at me afterwards!

Coffee with a good friend.
The easiest way to get rid of the winter blues is definitely a coffee and catch up with a good mate. My schedule’s more than a little busy at the moment but any worries I have completely disappear whenever I’ve seen a friend. It’s nice to have someone to have a vent to and a way of taking your mind off all the things that are worrying you. You’re likely helping them out as much as they’re helping you, too.

A movie night with all your favourite flicks.
The only movie I ever want to watch when I’m in a bad mood is Pride and Prejudice. I can even go as far as to say that me watching this movie is an indicator of the fact- I never watch it when I’m feeling happy. There’s something about Pride and Prejudice that just fixes everything about my bad mood. I also love watching Love Actually, The Holiday and Notting Hill when I’m down in the dumps or grumpy. Sometimes, a movie night, accompanied by a friend or partner to snuggle up to, a bag of microwave popcorn and a bottle of the white stuff is all it takes to stump a foul mood. I definitely recommend.

Baking delicious treats.
Another thing I’ve started doing recently when I’m feeling like absolute rubbish is to get the cookie cutters and the piping bags out and bake treats for myself. There are absolutely no negatives to this: baking is relaxing and you get to eat scrummy biscuits or cakes when you’ve finished. Win win.

Bring out your creative side.

As it happens, at the moment I’m really enjoying getting the paints out and having a go at being creative. I love art. I used to be really good at drawing and painting and would spend a lot of my free time practicing this. Over the last few years, I’ve let this completely dwindle out and I’m incredibly sad about this. I’ve decided that this year, when I’m feeling blue I’m going to whack the paints out and let my creativity shine.

What do you like to do when you're feeling blue? Let me know!

My absolute travel essentials for lightweight travel plans

My absolute travel essentials for lightweight travel plans

Anyone that knows me at all will know that I absolutely LOVE travelling. Probably even more than books, can you believe? I love the feeling of exploring a new city and the excitement building up to the big trip you’ve been planning for weeks. I was lucky enough, a few years ago, to spend a year teaching out in France – Strasbourg, more specifically- and whilst I wasn’t into the photography side of things as I am now, I made so many beautiful and amazing memories whilst I was there. Now that I am really into photography and blogging, making even more travel memories is on the cards, I thought I’d share my absolute travel essentials; the five things I HAVE to have slipped into my handbag whenever I go anywhere exciting.

TRAVEL DOCUMENT WALLET
I had a bit of a catastrophe last week when I realised, just over a week prior to my going to Paris for the weekend, that my passport was absolutely nowhere to be found. I ransacked my own house and had my mum turn my bedroom at their house upside down to no avail. I’ve managed to sort out a replacement, thankfully, but I’ve gone out and bought myself a travel document wallet where I’ll store my passport and other travel documents – coach tickets, insurance documents and so on- all together and put in a VERY safe place. It pays to think ahead.

MY TRUSTY LONELY PLANET GUIDE
Now, I’m not going to be lugging this 1000-page monstrosity about with me on my travels but I do have a copy of it on my kindle, for ease of access. I’m a bit old fashioned in that I like to be able to flick through a guide book and decide what type of tourist attractions I want to visit. I’ll then look them up on the internet and read some reviews to decide if they’re worth the trip.

GADGETS
I’m obviously going to need my trusty iPhone with me for maps, taking pictures and the like. I’ll be taking my beautiful new Olympus PEN camera along with me for the ride as well, coupled with a portable phone charger to make sure I’m never left in the lurch in a foreign city. I read a LOT of books when I travel so I’ll also be taking my kindle along with me to make sure I have plenty to read with me but without the added cargo.

A GOOD BOOK
Okay, so I KNOW I said I take my Kindle with me… but I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t have a paperback with me as well. I like the comfort of holding a book in my hand: I absolutely NEVER go out without a book in my bag, regardless of what I’m doing or who I’m meeting. (I’m meeting a friend out for a drink tonight and I’ve tucked Jamaica Inn in my bag to take with me, for example. You never know when you might need to pull a book out to fill a few minutes.) For my next trip to Paris, I’m planning on taking Matt Haig’s Reasons to Stay Alive. It’s a little, tiny paperback that will squeeze easily into my teensy little Kate Spade handbag. The perfect travel companion.

A NOTEBOOK (AND A TRUSTY FINELINER)
Whether it’s to make brief notes on a book I’m reading for review, note down a few new vocabulary terms when I’m speaking French with friends or else to help myself remember something I might want to blog or tweet about, my notebook is something that I have with me every single day, regardless of what I’m doing. Sometimes it’s nice to just have something to scribble in, just for something to do.

These are a FEW things that I HAVE to have with me whenever I take a trip somewhere. It’s not a particularly lengthy list of things, just the bare essentials to ensure that I have the best break that I possibly can, without weighing myself down with all the added extras. What do you HAVE to take with you on a trip? Let me know in the comments!
